Concentrations

  • Honors Program: The philosophy of the Honors Math Program is that mathematics is a logical discourse that requires developing early on rigorous reasoning and precise communication skills. These skills are increasingly important in this data and AI-infused era. This challenging program provides outstanding preparation both for employment in a wide variety of fields that value strong analytical and quantitative skills, and for further study in all mathematically intensive areas of the sciences (pure and applied mathematics, statistics and biostatistics, physics, economics, computer science, engineering, ...).
  • Honors Program in Arts & Letters: This is a rigorous mathematics major program in the College of Arts and Letters, which, like the Honors Program, is aimed at students with a more theoretical bent, and in particular at students who may want to pursue graduate study in mathematics.
  • Career Program: The career program is designed for students who want to use mathematics as a tool in science or industry, and emphasizes problem-solving while still providing a grounding in theory.
  • Life Sciences Program: Majors in the life sciences program take 20 additional credit hours in biology and chemistry. The program satisfies the University’s recommended criteria for application to medical school.
  • Mathematics and Computing: Designed for those going into graduate study or industrial careers in computing science.
  • Mathematics Education Program: Majors in the education program complete 30 credit hours of education courses at St. Mary’s College
  • Mathematics and Engineering Science Program: for students interested in applied or industrial mathematics.

Supplementary/Dual Degrees

  • Mathematics as a Second Major: Students may pursue a second major in mathematics by completing all mathematics courses required for the Career Program. To list mathematics as a second major on the transcript, the student must satisfy all the requirements for a major in a department other than mathematics at the University.
  • Supplementary Degree (MTH2): For students in Arts & Letters or Mendoza College of business. Requirements include all math courses in the Career Program, in addition to the requirements of the students' primary major.

Minors

  • The Minor in Mathematics invites undergraduate students from across disciplines to deepen their understanding of mathematical reasoning and explore fundamental and advanced topics in mathematics. Designed for students whose primary fields of study are outside the Department of Mathematics, the minor complements majors in engineering, business, science, and the liberal arts, offering a rigorous yet accessible path into mathematical thought.
    • There are no prerequisites for the Minor in Mathematics, other than prerequisites for individual courses. To join the minor or to express interest in joining, please fill out the Math Minor Google Form.
  • Actuarial Minor: This program is open to students in any major who are interested in pursuing a career as an actuary. Contact Andrei Jorza (ajorza@nd.edu) for more information.
