2024 Goldwater Award

Julian Kaufmann and Zachary Joseph win Goldwater Scholarships

Two of our Honors Mathematics students, juniors Julian Kaufmann and Zachary Joseph, have been awarded Goldwater scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship was established by Congress in 1986 and designed to identify, encourage, and financially support outstanding undergraduates interested in pursuing research careers in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics. The Goldwater Scholarship is the preeminent undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

Julian, from West Lafayette, Indiana, will pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics and a career in research and teaching after graduating from Notre Dame. He will complete a Senior Thesis next year with Professor Nick Salter. He took part in an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) inĀ 2022 at Notre Dame under Prof. Michael Gekhtman and an REU in 2023 at the University of Maryland. He will attend the 2024 Mathematics REU at University of Chicago. He participated here in Reading/Research programs with Prof. Frank Connolly , Prof. Liviu Nicolaescu and Prof. Matthew Zahr of the AME Department.

Zachary, from Menasha, Wisconsin, plans to pursue an ambitious dual degree MD/Ph.D program, after graduation from Notre Dame. He has previously participated in the Harvard Summer Research program in Kidney Research, and the Pediatric Summer Research Program of Washington University at St. Louis. He will enter the pre-renal initiative (PRI) this summer at Stanford.

Both Julian and Zachary have participated in our STRG (Small Topology Reading Group), an individualized mentoring program for the most motivated Notre Dame mathematics students.

This is the third time that there have been two Goldwater scholars from Notre Dame Mathematics (this happened previously in 2008 and 2013). In all 18 Mathematics majors have been awardees.

Congratulations, Julian and Zachary, on your outstanding achievements!
