The effect of nongeneric curves on topological structures of symplectic ruled surfaces
Abstract: Symplectomorphism groups of ruled surfaces have been a rewarding topic for several decades. Most tools used to investigate their homotopy stem from a detailed analysis of how J holomorphic curves affect related structures, for example spaces of almost complex structures. We will overview some techniques and discuss ongoing progress regarding detection of nontrivial Samelson products in symplectomorphism groups of blow ups of ruled surfaces. Parts of the work are joint with Jun Li or Jason Clouser.
