Sergei Starchenko, professor of mathematics, was recently named a fellow in the American Mathematical Society for 2017.
The AMS named 65 fellows for 2017, the fifth year of the fellowship program. The organization’s goal is to further the interests of mathematical research, scholarship and education through publications, meetings and advocacy. The fellows designation recognizes members who “have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics.”
Starchenko’s work focuses on model theory, a part of mathematical logic. He studies sets and functions that are definable in “well-behaved” first-order structures and also applies his research to other areas such as geometry, analysis, algebraic geometry and combinatorics.
Some of his work and that of his coauthors is part of some recent developments in arithmetic geometry related to Andre-Oort conjecture.
Starchenko said his selection as a fellow is an honor. “For me, it’s a recognition of my work. I am very pleased,” he said. Starchenko is the ninth Notre Dame faculty member to be named a fellow in the AMS since the program began.
